When people think VC, they picture someone deciding which startups to back. But a big chunk of the people working at VC firms have never made an investment decision.

An that’s because they work in Platform.

Platform is the support and services a VC firm offers founders post-investment, plus everything that goes into building the firm itself. As competition among VCs intensifies, this value-add beyond capital has become a real differentiator.

Platform roles primarily fall wthin 6 pillars:

  1. Business development & partnerships

  2. Community & portfolio support

  3. Internal operations

  4. Investor relations & fundraising

  5. Marketing, content & events

  6. Talent & recruiting

None of these are investing roles, though at smaller firms, platform folks often get exposure to the investment side too.

Within each of these pillars, there are role levels just like on the investment side: Analyst/Associate, Manager/Senior Associate, Director, Vice President/Senior VP, Partner/CxO.

Today I'm breaking down what each pillar actually does and what comp looks like at every level.
