VC Interview Process: 8 steps from application to offer

Let’s land you that dream VC role! 🪄

Hi! I’m glad you’re here. You’ve made it to issue #23 of VC Demystified🪄.

My name’s Nicole - I’m a Principal at an early stage venture fund, and I know firsthand that VC can often be a black box. Breaking into the industry may feel daunting and resources can seem scarce and inaccessible. I wanted to put together a newsletter to give others the playbook I wish I had when I first started.

As we enter Fall, I’m seeing startup fundraises pick up and VC job openings accelerate. If you took a break over the summer from fundraising or VC recruiting, it’s time to get back into it! You got this.

Today’s deep dive: An illustrative breakdown of a VC interview process start to finish

My personal mission is to open as many doors as possible for other people and this newsletter is just one avenue to do that. As always, I will continue to post VC insights daily across my socials for those of you who prefer those channels.

An illustrative breakdown of a VC interview process start to finish

Knowing what to expect when entering a VC interview process can help you better prepare and increase your chances of success.

Often times these processes can be opaque and many go in blind.

In this post, I attempt to take you through 8 common steps of a VC interview process.

Now it’s important to note that every VC firm has a different process so some may resemble this and others may not.

Generally though, if you prepare for these 8 steps, you should be well prepared for most VC interview processes as some may have all 8 steps (potentially in different orders) and some may only have a few, but regardless you’ll know what to expect.

VC interview processes can take anywhere from 1-4 months. In rare cases, they can be shorter or longer than that.

When entering a new process, be sure to:

  1. Reply promptly to emails

  2. Ask for the firm’s goals with this new hire

  3. Ask for a comprehensive view of the steps and expected timing of the process

  4. Reach out to previous employees of the firm to see if you can get insight into the hiring process

From application to offer, here are the 8 steps you need to know.

Let’s get into it!
