The resume that landed me my first VC internship with no previous VC experience

Let’s land you that dream VC role! 🪄

Hi! I’m glad you’re here. You’ve made it to issue #4 of VC Demystified🪄.

My name’s Nicole - I’m a Principal at an early stage venture fund, and I know firsthand that VC can often be a black box. Breaking into the industry may feel daunting and resources can seem scarce and inaccessible. I wanted to put together a newsletter to give others the playbook I wish I had when I first started.

There are nearly 2,000 of you reading this newsletter weekly. Thank you for joining me on this journey!

Today’s deep dive: The resume that landed me my first VC internship

My personal mission is to open as many doors as possible for other people and this newsletter is just one avenue to do that. As always, I will continue to post VC insights daily across my socials for those of you who prefer those channels.

The resume that landed me my first VC internship

Getting through the resume drop phase in a VC interview process is one of the most difficult phases with the lowest rate of conversion. The reason being one role gets hundreds of applicants.

Making it through this phase requires creativity and persistence. There are many things you can do to supplement your resume during this phase, BUT having a well-crafted resume is step #1 and an absolute must.

Common red flags I see in VC candidate resumes:
🚩Typos
🚩Too wordy
🚩Poor formatting
🚩Font size too small
🚩Multi-page resumes
🚩Failing to use action verbs
🚩Resumes sent in Word doc
🚩Overuse of photos and/or colors
🚩Not tailoring or trying to include every experience

Each resume will look different based on your experience, but there is a standardization to each that should be followed to increase your chances of reaching the interview phases.

I’m going to provide you with the resume I used to land my first VC internship experience and point out the details that I believe got me over the line.

If you’re finding yourself getting stuck at the resume drop phase, this is for you.

Let’s get into it!
